Animal advocacy group NYCLASS (New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets) has learned that yet another carriage accident occurred today at 12:30 PM when a carriage horse stumbled inside Central Park near Tavern on the Green at West 67th Street. This is the second confirmed accident this fall. Although there are no reported injuries to the three carriage occupants or driver, the 7-year-old horse, named Henry, sustained an abrasion to his front leg, and was immediately suspended from work and returned to Westside Livery to be examined by a veterinarian. “With the increasing frequency of these dangerous incidents, what part of a NYC horse carriage ride could possibly be romantic? We at NYCLASS call on the City Council and the Speaker to stand up and take unified action to immediately pass legislation before another accident happens, before another horse or human is hurt or killed.” NYCLASS continues to work to pass Intro. 86A, legislation that calls for a phase-out of horse carriages in New York City and replacing them with the 21st Century "Horseless Carriage", electric-powered vehicles styled and constructed to replicate turn of the century cars. Intro 86A is a needed change to this archaic industry; one that will maintain jobs, generate revenue, attract tourists and most importantly - save the lives of the City's carriage horses.
