(NEW YORK, NY) – In a recent interview, Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, demonstrated her commitment to animal welfare and lamented the Bloomberg Administration’s lack of concern and funding for Animal Care & Control which forces the organization to euthanize thousands of healthy animals due to lack of space. NYCLASS Lauds Georgina Bloomberg for Speaking Out on Animal Issues

She also highlighted the poor conditions of carriage horses in the City and suggested that it is time for a change. As an equestrian, Ms. Bloomberg clearly understands the need to establish humane animal practices in New York City.

“I want to applaud Georgina Bloomberg for voicing her concerns about the horrifying practices that our animals are facing in NYC,” Allie Feldman, Executive Director of NYCLASS said. “Her courageous opposition to the inhumane treatment of carriage horses was met with scorn and disrespect by Stephen Malone, a spokesman for the Horse and Carriage Association of New York. He dismissed her concerns as ‘drinking the animal-rights Kool-Aid’ and belittled her opinion simply because she is the Mayor’s daughter. Ms. Bloomberg is a knowledgeable, accomplished equestrian who spoke from the heart about the state of horses on dangerous midtown streets. It is categorically wrong for industry stooges to dismiss her opinion just as they have discarded the health and safety of the animals they exploit. NYCLASS’s pilot program to phase out horse carriages and replace them with vintage-era, electric vehicles will preserve the allure of a ride through Central Park, increase revenue, and protect the jobs of carriage drivers. We are grateful to Ms. Bloomberg for her commitment to the humane treatment of animals.”

More About NYCLASS:

NYCLASS is an animal advocacy organization committed to ending the inhumane practices of the NYC carriage horse industry. NYCLASS advocates for retiring the carriage horses to sanctuary, while modernizing the current industry with a clean and safe alternative to this outdated tradition - the 21st Century Horseless Carriage. NYCLASS also advocates for many other NYC animal issues such as protecting a senior citizen's right to have a companion pet, mandating pet stores install fire sprinklers, protecting animals used in entertainment and reforming the city's animal shelter system. Founded in 2008 by a coalition of prominent animal lovers and business leaders, NYCLASS has grown to over 110,000 supporters with activist chapters in all five boroughs.
