STATEMENT FROM NYCLASS
Calling Segments of Christine Quinn’s New Book Outrageous, She Has Done Nothing But Harm Animals
In a recent New York Times article discussing the new memoir by Christine Quinn we found many parts to be disingenuous or hypocritical we can’t decide which but the following quotes concerned us:
On the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding, which Quinn describes as “the activity that sustained me” as a teenager: “If you have ever looked into the eyes of a horse, you know what I mean. Sadness and kindness flow from them.”
“In her new book Christine Quinn suggests that there’s no better feeling then riding a horse, and we agree, horses should be free and should be cared for in open pastures. Unfortunately, Quinn has tirelessly fought against our plans for a pilot program in NYC that would retire these horses.” Allie Feldman, Spokeswoman for NYCLASS said. “We too have looked the horses in the eye as she suggests in her book, and all we see is their pain and suffering. The carriage horses in NYC are overworked, and do so in a dangerous environment not only for them but pedestrians and riders as well. We simply don’t believe Quinn’s heralding of how horses healed her. If she ever looked a horse in the eye they would run away from her, because they know she’s not an advocate for them. Further, she won’t even allow a privately funded pilot program to replace the horses’ move forward. Speaker Quinn, we challenge you to really look our NYC carriage horses in the eye and allow us to move forward to find a solution that’s better for the animals, our residents and our planet.”
More About NYCLASS:
NYCLASS is an animal advocacy organization committed to ending the inhumane practices of the NYC carriage horse industry. NYCLASS advocates for retiring the carriage horses to sanctuary, while modernizing the current industry with a clean and safe alternative to this outdated tradition - the 21st Century Horseless Carriage. NYCLASS also advocates for many other NYC animal issues such as protecting a senior citizen's right to have a companion pet, mandating pet stores install fire sprinklers, protecting animals used in entertainment and reforming the city's animal shelter system. Founded in 2008 by a coalition of prominent animal lovers and business leaders, NYCLASS has grown to over 110,000 supporters with activist chapters in all five boroughs.
