STATEMENT FROM NYCLASS
Calling Quinn’s Statement on Animal Shelters Outrageous and Lacking True Knowledge of the Issue and Compassion for Animals
In a recent statement by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn discussing city animal shelters, Quinn claims she supports making NYC a No-Kill model city for animal shelters. NYCLASS finds this completely ridiculous – For years Quinn stood by while the Department of Health starved the Animal Care and Control (AC&C) of proper funding and refused to build badly needed shelters for the Bronx and Queens.
In 2011, Quinn fast-tracked legislation overturning a 2000 law mandating the construction of full-service animal shelters in all five boroughs, letting the DOH wiggle out of its legal obligation to build those missing shelters. Thanks to Quinn using her power as Speaker, the AC&C remains a grossly underfunded and overcrowded shelter system. The Bronx and Queens are still without full service animal shelters. Residents must travel to Manhattan, Brooklyn or Staten Island to adopt a pet, cutting off thousands of potential adopters from saving the 10,000 healthy animals who are euthanized annually due to lack of funding and space.
Today, we are calling on Quinn to provide badly needed funding for shelters in New York City:
“How convenient – Quinn claims she supports a No-Kill sheltering model three months before the election while she’s been no friend to animals for the past 8 years as Speaker,” Allie Feldman, Executive Director of NYCLASS said. “Make no bones about it, animal lovers can’t be fooled – Quinn is no hero. Without proper funding and full service shelters in every borough, a No-Kill model is impossible. Shame on Quinn for thinking she can throw around the term No-Kill while killing proposals to reform and fund a progressive, humane shelter system.”
