Congratulations to Melissa Mark-Viverito -- a true animal rights hero -- on her election as New York City Council Speaker.  

Our new Speaker has fought for animal rights throughout her time on the Council and was the prime sponsor of legislation that would phase out horse-drawn carriages in New York City, replacing them with state-of-the-art vintage electric cars. The fall elections definitely showed that New Yorkers of all backgrounds support a more humane and inclusive future for our city, and we look forward to working with Speaker Mark-Viverito and Mayor de Blasio on an array of animal right issues in the months and years to come.
