New York, NY – On the evening of June 7, an accident involving a SUV, a motorcycle, and a carriage horse occurred in Columbus Circle. New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets has released the following statement;
"Once again, on June 7 dozens of New Yorkers had to witness another accident involving motor vehicles, pedestrians, and a carriage horse. Once again, New Yorkers were put at risk in order to protect this abusive practice within the industry. Once again, a carriage horse, (Doreen) was recklessly driven through Columbus Cirle, one of New York's most congested, unyielding areas of traffic, and pulled away after a harrowing experience; injuring her, the drivers, and damaging property. New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets, (NYCLASS) is not alone in demanding an end to this abuse. Over 84,000 people agree, the industry must be changed. We urge all New Yorkers to call your local City Councilmember and ask them to support Intro 86A, ending this abuse in our city."
NYCLASS continues to work to pass Intro. 86A, legislation that calls for a phase-out of horse carriages in New York City and replacing them with the 21st Century "Horseless Carriage", electric-powered vehicles styled and constructed to replicate turn of the century cars. Intro 86A is a needed change to this archaic industry; one that will maintain jobs, generate revenue, attract tourists and most importantly - save the lives of the city's carriage horses.
