Today, New Yorkers for Clean Livable And Safe Streets (NYCLASS) announced its first round of endorsements for Council Candidates in Bronx districts. This is the animal rights organization’s fourth public endorsement of City Council candidates.

The endorsement brings up the interesting topic of animal rights in Bronx politics. Thousands of abandoned animals continue to roam the streets. Political initiatives for animal rights encompasses a large range of programs that politicians can push for including effective neutering programs, adoption services and the encouraging of closing puppy mills and horse drawn carriages in Central Park. Irregardless, it is obvious that  comprehensive animal rights reform cannot be put off any longer.

“NYCLASS proudly endorses eight candidates for City Council in the Bronx,” Allie Feldman, Executive Director of NYCLASS said. “These candidates have pledged to stand by NYCLASS as we continue to urge the City to build shelters across the borough in order to protect the thousands of abandoned animals that roam the streets of New York. These animal heroes will fight to give the Bronx the animal shelter it deserves. Protecting New York City’s animals is our number one priority, and we look forward to working closely with these candidates once they are victorious onSeptember 10 and in the General Election in November.”

NYCLASS is an animal advocacy organization committed to ending the inhumane practices of the NYC carriage horse industry. NYCLASS advocates for retiring the carriage horses to sanctuary, while modernizing the current industry with a clean and safe alternative to this outdated tradition – the 21st Century Horseless Carriage. NYCLASS also advocates for many other NYC animal issues such as protecting a senior citizen’s right to have a companion pet, mandating pet stores install fire sprinklers, protecting animals used in entertainment and reforming the city’s animal shelter system. Founded in 2008 by a coalition of prominent animal lovers and business leaders, NYCLASS has grown to over 110,000 supporters with activist chapters in all five boroughs. Here at the Boogiedowner we praise NYCLASS for their strong stance on animal rights and encourage all Bronx candidates to take animal rights into account in their policies.
