NYCLASS Calls for Release of Mistreated Military Horses and NYC Carriage Horses

NEW YORK -- The following statement can be attributed to Edita Birnkrant, Executive Director of NYCLASS, in response to a new Army report finding that Old Guard horses that carry military heroes to their final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery are living in horrible conditions, "consuming poor-quality feed, suffering from parasites and standing in their own excrement in tiny mud lots scattered with gravel and construction waste." NYCLASS is calling for these mistreated horses - and NYC carriage horses - to be released to an animal sanctuary.

"It's heartbreaking that military horses that carry America’s heroes to their graves at Arlington National Cemetery are dying miserable deaths after spending their existence in horrifying, life-threatening conditions. Exploiting horses to continue a 19th Century-era ceremony is no way to honor our veterans. It's long overdue to end this obsolete practice as well as transitioning away from the abuse-ridden horse carriages in New York City. The Old Guard horses -- just like the suffering horses forced to pull carriages in chaotic Midtown Manhattan -- should be released to an animal sanctuary as soon as possible so they can live the rest of their lives in peace, not in misery."
