NEW YORK-Horse-drawn carriages delight tourists and locals, cause outrage among animal rights activists, and have some people holding their noses as they pass by a congregation of horses and their droppings along Central Park South.
Two accidents involving the carriages occurred in July, drawing renewed scrutiny to the industry. A public opinion poll conducted by Crain's New York Business in April 2010 showed that 78 percent of the 627 people polled believed the carriages should be banned.
